September 2011
Welcome to MASFAA,
Whether you are new to our profession or you are very experienced, all financial aid professionals are welcome to join our community. In our 42nd year, MASFAA has a long and storied history of providing excellent training and professional development in a collegial environment. Please join us to meet, interact and converse with your colleagues.
To start the 2011-2012 year, in July, we hosted the NASFAAA Conference in Boston. It is an exciting year for all of us involved in financial aid. So far, the MASFAA Executive Council has met twice over the summer to plan for the 2011-2012 academic year. The Council decided upon four goals that will be integral in the Association’s activities this year:
• Advance the Art and Science of our Profession with students, families, on and off-campus colleagues, faculty and administration, elected and governmental officials
• Increase engagement of members
• Continued commitment to high quality, cost effective training and professional development
• Update the Association’s strategic plan
MASFAA’s annual conference will be held at Showcase Live, Patriot Place in Foxboro on November 2-3, 2011. The theme of the conference, Achieving the Balance – The Art and Science of Financial Aid, speaks to the first goal set by the Executive Council with many sessions focused on the Art and Science of our profession. This year’s conference promises to be a great program, and one offered at the same reduced registration fee as last year. Additional information on the conference will be emailed shortly.
Working toward the second goal of increasing the engagement of MASFAA members, the Executive Council (EC) decided to remind everyone that the our EC meetings are open to all MASFAA members. An email will be sent a week before the EC meetings to the MASFAA members on our list-serve with highlights of the previous meeting and an invitation to attend. Please, that week, if you do plan to attend, email me, pekala@bc.edu, so we can plan on sufficient seating. So, for your planning purposes, see below for a schedule of our meetings:

MASFAA committees are engaged in planning the wide variety of student outreach, training and professional development events offered in addition to the annual conference. Information regarding training opportunities will be available on our website and sent to the MASFAA list. As articulated in the third goal, we do not want to lose sight of our brilliant legacy of high quality training.
In pursuit of the fourth goal to update the MASFAA Strategic Plan, at the MASFAA Conference on Wednesday, November 3rd, there will be a general and a break-out session on our Strategic Planning process. MASFAA members need to be involved and provide input to assist MASAFAA as we look forward to the future and set priorities for what initiatives we should pursue in the next 5 years.
Hopefully, you will be able to join all of your colleagues this year as an active and engaged member of the MASFAA community. While very challenging, our profession has incredible intrinsic rewards. Our profession is fortunate to have many dedicated, hard-working experts that promote access and attainment for all students. Supporting each other in this endeavor is what makes the journey a rich and rewarding one.
