Name: Daniel Barkowitz
Title: Dean of Financial Aid / Associate Dean of Student Affairs

Areas of Interest/Expertise/Prior Professional Experience: Daniel has a diverse range of work experience. He worked as a loan originator, servicer and collections agent at Knight College Resource Group working with parent and student loans, as Director of Operations and Training for the Massachusetts Education Financing Authority, and as a Financial Aid Officer at Boston College, Lasell College, Simmons College and now MIT (in roles from Assistant Director to Director). He also has served as a systems, training, and processing consultant for many institutions (both public and private) and corporations, specializing in interfacing Financial Aid software with other systems and training on issues of customer service and skills development. Daniel has served on various MASFAA Committees, served as an Executive Council member, and is a recipient of MASFAA's Presidential Award. Daniel holds a M.Ed. in Human Resource Education from Boston University and a B.Sc. in History from Northeastern University.

Areas of Interest/Expertise/Prior Professional Experience: Graduate financial aid. I was the Registrar at the School of Social Work and then began in financial aid as financial aid coordinator in 1987.
Name: Gail Holt
Title: Dean of Financial Aid

Areas of Interest/Expertise/Prior Professional Experience: Gail joined Mount Holyoke College as Senior Associate Director of Student Financial Services in 2005 where she works with the management team to ensure superior distribution of student service through training and staff development, system support and effective policy, procedure and compliance. Prior to Mount Holyoke, she was the Senior Associate Director of Client Services at Northeastern University for three years. Gail has over ten years of experience in financial aid which began at Boston University. While at Boston University she was the Senior Assistant Director where she was responsible for the management of the awarding functions and customer service area. Before that, Gail held positions as an Assistant Director, a Financial Aid Assistant and a customer service representative. Gail is currently Tri-Chair of Massachusetts College Goal Sunday, a national program brought to Massachusetts in 2005 to provide students free help in completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Gail served the Massachusetts Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (MASFAA) as an Executive Council Member-at-Large from 2003-2005 and was the Co-Chair of the Early Awareness and Outreach Committee from 2001 through 2004. Gail received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Early Childhood Education from Boston College and has a masters degree in Higher Education Administration from Boston University.

Title: Associate Director, Financial Assistance

Areas of Interest/Expertise/Prior Professional Experience: Prior to coming to Boston University in 1991, I was the Director of Financial Aid at Bridgewater State College. I began at Bridgewater State in 1980 after having worked as an admissions counselor at Emerson College since 1978.

Areas of Interest/Expertise/Prior Professional Experience: Experience includes financial aid management at the University of Kansas and student loan marketing with USA Group. Also served as Director of State Financial Aid Programs for Kansas and Massachusetts.

Title: Policy Analyst

Areas of Interest/Expertise/Prior Professional Experience: My main areas of interest are access to and success in higher education. I am also concerned with diversity issues in higher education. Before entering into the financial aid policy field, I attained an Ed.M. in the Higher Education Program at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. I have experience counseling students from underrepresented backgrounds (e.g. first-generation, low-income, and students of color).
Name: Sherri Avery
Title: Director of Financial Aid and Student Employment
Institution: Brandeis University

Areas of Interest/Expertise/Prior Professional Experience: After four years as a Work-Study student in the Office of Financial Aid at Brandeis University, I became Assistant Director of Financial Aid at this institution upon graduation. In this role, I managed the Student Employment program, the Direct Loan program and the assignment of endowed scholarships. In my current role as the Associate Director of Student Financial Services, I oversee the financial aid and student employment staff. In addition, I manage all aspects of undergraduate financial aid and hourly student employment, oversee the awarding of all graduate financial aid within the University, process all financial aid for the University’s Continuing Education program, maintain the office website and develop and edit all office publications. I have participated greatly in MASFAA throughout my financial aid career, serving as Co-Chair of the Newsletter, Membership and College Goal Sunday Committees and as Secretary, Treasurer and, currently, as President of the Association.
