 Purpose

The purpose of the committee is to be engaged with financial aid administrators in the state to promote early college planning initiatives at the middle school and high school levels with the knowledge that the cost of college is the greatest challenge for underrepresented and low-income populations. We also act as a resource for MASFAA members in the areas of early awareness and financial aid presentations so that they may remain educated, engaged, and effective as professionals.

 Activities

Committee activities include: expanding the partnership with the State's GEAR UP programs, guidance communities, and institution presidents; producing and distributing the English and Spanish versions of the College Savings Times to both MASFAA members and the guidance community; developing and conducting the 1 st MASFAA Carnival of Learning for approximately 50 middle-school students to be held prior to the annual fall MASFAA Conference; developing and submitting a proposal for the Lumina Foundation College Goal Sunday planning grant; building on the success of The Journey to College Begins in Middle School project; as well as providing training and presentation materials to MASFAA members for outreach and working with MASFAA committees to achieve these goals.

 2007/2008 Objectives

1. Continue to expand the partnership with the state’s GEAR UP programs, guidance communities, and institutions presidents.

2. Review data from the on-line College Savings Times survey. Update and reprint the English and Spanish versions according to survey results.

3. Work with the Technology Committee to enhance the MASFAA Early Awareness web page, including presentations, resources, etc.

4. Develop and conduct the 3rd MASFAA Carnival of Learning to be held as a 2005 MASFAA pre-conference event for 75 middle school students.

5. Build on the success of the “The Journey to College Begins in Middle School” project.
