President’s Welcome

Welcome to MASFAA 2016-2017

Greetings MASFAA colleagues!

It’s amazing to me how time flies.  Another academic year is upon us, a new group of students are beginning their careers at our institutions and MASFAA is busy planning new programming and services for our members.  It also doesn’t seem possible to me that almost 20 years ago I stood before MASFAA with my fellow technology co-chair Mike Mullaney, to debut MASFAA’s first comprehensive website.  Now, as I begin my term as MASFAA President these many years later, I am happy to welcome you to our new association website.  I hope you will find it helpful and we will be taking advantage of many of the new technological advances that it offers.

Beyond the website, MASFAA Council has a lot planned for this year.  As always, we start with an annual retreat in August where all the elected council members and committee chairs gather to discuss the upcoming year.  Some of the areas we plan to focus on this year include:

  • Convening an ad hoc committee to develop the strategic plan for the next 5 years
  • Harnessing the technology of our new website and membership database to better communicate and interact with members
  • Offering continuing training and professional development opportunities including contributions from MASFAA’s newest committee on Financial Literacy

We are so fortunate to have one of the strongest state associations in the country.  It is because of highly engaged members that we now have a Financial Literacy Committee.  There are many options for volunteerism in MASFAA.  They range from volunteering for a day or two at MASFAA’s FAFSA day events or the Carnival of Learning to being a member of a committee for a longer period of time.  Please consider volunteering, I think you’ll find it’s a worthwhile experience.  I’ve not only enhanced my knowledge through my years of MASFAA volunteerism, I’ve also been lucky to meet valued colleagues, many of whom I am happy to count among my closest friends.

I’d like to thank Jim Slattery for all the help and guidance he gave me during my year as President-Elect.  I hope I can be as good a resource for Susan Sullivan, President-Elect, during her upcoming year.  Please contact me if you have any ideas or concerns you’d like MASFAA to address.
